As I am sure many of you are aware, Canada has been going through an electoral boundary redistribution process over the past year. As a result, our riding of “Welland” was redistributed, and on April 1st officially became Niagara Centre.
Many of you will note that this is a blast from the past. Previous to 2003, Welland and Thorold had been the riding of Niagara Centre. With this most recent change, we are returning to our past heritage of strong liberal support. For countless decades, strong Liberal Members of Parliament have represented the citizens of this riding. What is the common thread? You may ask…people centred politics. Liberal members put the needs of their constituent first.
For too long we have accepted the status quo of events in Welland, Port Colborne, Thorold and South St. Catharines. We have accepted that the economy is changing, that wages are dropping, that unemployment is rising and that there is nothing you can do about it. It is my job to remind you that you could not be more wrong.
Niagara Centre needs a strong, community minded representative. A representative that will remind the party leaders in Ottawa, that the status quo down in our neck of the woods is not acceptable. That factories closing and jobs disappearing…is not acceptable. We need a representative who will stand up for our communities and go to bat for them, and not special interest or party leadership.
Justin Trudeau is building a team that will put communities first. Justin wants representatives that will put people over politics, representatives that will build people up…not tear them down. This is what politics is supposed to be about; this is what governments should be focused on.
We need real change, and Liberals have always represented the qualities that I have noted above. So I challenge each and every citizen…do you have what it takes to be a community leader? Do you have what it takes to be a Member of Parliament? If you do, I encourage you to contact me directly. Now is the time for real community leaders, for real representatives.
It’s time to stand and be counted. Welcome to the riding of Niagara Centre, we are here to serve you. Looking to volunteer or get involved? Contact me directly.
With Warm Regards,Peter S. Opdam, President- Niagara Centre Federal Liberals firstname.lastname@example.org @PoPdam @NiagCenLiberals
